Leadership has never been more demanding.
We know it but the irony is that we are choosing not to acknowledge it. We don't invest in top leadership talent to support them in this VUCA world in a holistic way. We rather keep on sending them to workshops and trainings to develop them horizontally, to add new skills here and there, instead of investing into their vertical development. We just hope it happens magically.
Does it? I don't think so. (... starts reading from the top: The Great Resignation. Quiet quitting. ... adds boreout and burnout...)
Let's face it. We need to challenge the status-quo and re-imagine leadership!
Why? To make careers better for all (the leaders, their teams, the companies and eventually everyone around them from customers to families).
Let's work backwards from our goal: So, we want to develop leaders who are peak-performing AND flourishing in this VUCA world - to make careers better for all?
Vertical development is the key to do so. In scientific terms it refers to an individual's progressive growth through stages of increasing socio-emotional and cognitive sophistication, shaping how they interpret and interact with their environment.
In short: vertical development equals personal growth.
Only if and when a leader grows into their personal authentic self, they can become an authentic leader when leading others. (Because, let's be honest, you lead the relationships with your friends, kids, partner exactly in the same way as you lead your teams at work...)
Authentic leaders are aware of their values and needs, and behave in line with them. They trust themselves and their intuition, and are genuine in their relationships. They are deeply trusted by their superiors and their teams. They are better decision makers.
Moreover, authenticity is often perceived as the most fundamental aspect of well-being. And research shows that behaving authentically promotes psychological growth and fulfillment.
