High potentials are an intriguing employee demographic. They have the "potential, ability and aspiration for successive leadership within a company," as explained in Deloitte's High Potential Strategy Maturity Model. Coaching high potentials presents a tremendous opportunity to advance their long-term professional goals, alongside with numerous benefits to the organizations, for example increased employee retention or the creation of a robust leadership pipeline.
When coaching high-potentials, I follow the Authentic Leadership framework. In order to grow a leader one must grow the whole person. Once the crucial business skills are mastered, the biggest catalyst to improving leadership effectiveness lies in cultivating self-awareness and self-management which then results in leading from an authentic core.
I usually start High Potential Coaching with a strengths assessment through the VIA Character Strengths Survey that is solidly based on the science of positive psychology. We will then work on personal values which leads us to vision and mission.
